It is perhaps the one facet of game fans abhor the most.
Officials have stated many times they would like to see something done about the problem, with an increased emphasis on handing out cards, where appropriate, for simulation. But are they actually doing something about it? I looked at the major European leagues for evidence. The only available data started in the 2009-2010 season. There is evidence that some leagues, in particular Serie A, are taking necessary steps to eradicate the simulation scourge. Personally, I would prefer harsher retroactive penalties such as fines and suspensions in lieu of a yellow card, which functions as not much more than a slap on the wrist. But this is a start.
